At Riverside Church, we are all about living in the current. To us, that means we center everything we do around three values: experiencing grace, growing in love and giving of ourselves. These three values are represented by the head, heart and hands icons you see below.
Here’s how we like to explain it:

 Experience Grace:

Creating environments for people to receive, live in, and share God’s grace.

Ephesians 2:8-10: "For it is by grace that you have been saved, through faith and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."

Grow in Love:

Providing opportunities for people to grow in wisdom, character, and obedience.

Ephesians 4:15: "Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the head, that is, Christ."

Give of Yourself:

Equipping people for effective stewardship, investing time, talent and treasure.

2 Corinthians 9:8: "And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things and at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work."

Our Discipleship Process:

What does it mean to “live in the current?”

A river’s current is a mighty movement of water that sweeps up everything in its path and carries it to a new destination. It is powerful, it is constantly changing, and it is unstoppable. A current is never stagnant; it does not leave anything within its banks in the same place. At Riverside Church, Living in the Current is more than just a tagline. It describes the purpose, the process and the person that is created through the movement of Riverside’s discipleship process. In John 7:38 Jesus said, “Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.”

Current Discipleship Guide

At Riverside, our mission is: To reach and equip people, helping them become fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ.

In order to help people become more like Jesus, we defined a process for discipleship at Riverside. We wanted that discipleship process to be as straight-forward and clear-cut as possible. So we listed the major points on the “current” journey at Riverside Church for you.

  • First, a person begins their journey with experiencing grace, represented by the head icon. We have listed the activities that are intended to help a person experience God’s grace underneath that icon.

  • Next, as the person deepens their relationship with Christ, they begin to grow in love. We use the heart icon to represent activities that are intended to help a person grow in God’s love.

  • Finally, as a person’s focus shifts outward and they begin to realize how God wants to use them to lead other people through the current, they give of themselves. We use the hands icon to symbolize activities that help people use the time, talent and treasures God has entrusted to them.

Remember, this is just a guide intended to help you flow in the direction of Jesus. The current will not flow the same for each believer, but this map can help set a framework for intentionally becoming more like Him.

Imagine if we could tap into the power of a mighty rushing current and harness it for ourselves? We can. God’s power is readily available to us, we just need to get swept up in it.
